Gary J. Deavers, 62, of Roscoe, died suddenly on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, in the emergency room at Mon Valley Hospital. He was born Dec. 30, 1945, in North Charleroi, a son of the late Willard and Ann Strelecky Deavers. Gary was a 1962 graduate of California Area High School. He served in the Signal Corps with the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. After Vietnam, he was employed by Union Switch & Signal from 1967 to 1969. In 1982 he retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel as a machinist, going to work for Roscoe Borough until 1988. Gary served as a director of the Roscoe Sportsman Association and was on the executive board of the Roscoe American Legion Post No. 801. He also was a member of the Roscoe Slovak Club and an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. Survivors include his step mother, Margaret Patsick Deavers, of Fayette City; his wife of 39 years, Laura Lytle Deavers, of Roscoe; a son, Robert Deavers, of Ellsworth; a daughter, Tammy Deavers and friend Brian Griffith, of Newell; grandson, Trevor Griffith, of Newell; one sister, Mrs. William (Patricia) Weld, of Malden; two step sisters, Mrs. Frank (Pamela) Thomas, of Fayette City, and Mrs. Michael (Candice) Ornot, of Bentleyville; one step brother, William Deavers, of Plato, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the ED MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES INC., Roscoe, where American Legion services will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Fr. George Moneck officiating. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora.
