George J. Konick Jr., 89, formerly of Roscoe, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Broadmore Senior Living in Bridgeville. A son of the late George Sr. and Mary Kawelkewics Konick, he was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Charleroi. Mr. Konick was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Charleroi for 55 years where he served on the Vestry, as Warden of Old West Church, and as an usher. He was also a member of Tri-County Lodge #252 of the Free & Accepted Masons and American Legion Post 801. During WWII Mr. Konick proudly served his country in the Army with the 397th Bomb Group "Bridge Busters" in Belgium, England and France for which he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern (EAME) Service Medal. He was retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Allenport Plant, where he worked for over 40 years. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Georgetta (David) Zanardelli of Eighty-Four, Carole (Carlton) Nau of Bremerton, Wash., and Diane Scheponik of Roscoe; five grandchildren, Gina Zanardelli, Kristoffer (Kimberly) Scheponik, Brian (Jessica) Nau, Eric (Bonnie) Nau and Erica (Jon) Graeff; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise Zilka Konick on Aug. 23, 2001; and two brothers, William and Eugene Konick. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc., 1008 Furlong Ave., Roscoe. Prayers for Mr. Konick will be recited in the funeral home on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass at 10 AM in St. Mary's Anglican Church in Charleroi with Rev. Bob Hanna presiding. Interment will follow in Charleroi Cemetery at which time full military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post 801. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Mary's Anglican Church, 509 6th Street, Charleroi, PA 15022-1367; or to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
