Michael A. Troyan, 87, of Charleroi, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Mon Valley Hospital Inc. Born in Brownsville on April 16, 1922, he was the son of the late Mike and Anna (Vernallis) Troyan. He was a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served during World War II. After receiving his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Troyan began his teaching career at the former Fallowfield Junior High School, where he taught industrial arts and also served as the assistant football coach. He then had a two-year stay at Charleroi High School, where he taught math and science before moving on to the Bentworth School District. While at Bentworth, he served as principal and later as assistant superintendent of schools from where he retired. Mr. Troyan was a member of Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi, where he was active in the church councils, the Charleroi Lions Club, and he volunteered for the Area Agency on Aging, where he would prepare income tax returns and deliver Meals on Wheels. He and his wife Margaret, who passed away Sept. 30, 2006, proudly sponsored numerous children from all over the world in the Save the Children program. He was not only extremely dedicated to his family but also to the community. Survivors include three children, Maureen Troyan, of Yardley, Kenneth Troyan, of Atlanta, Ga., and Dennis Troyan, of Los Angelis, Calif.; one granddaughter, Tonya Allen and husband Gerald, of Downingtown; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan Michael and Madison Nicole Allen. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Kelly and Alberta Troyan. Friends will be received Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at MELENYZER-DuBARR FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 825 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi (724-483-2231). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church with the Rev. David F. Dzermejko officiating. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
