Nick A. Ciappa Sr., 90, of California, Pa., passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2008 in Mon Valley Care Center. He was born November 5, 1917 in Van Voorhis, a son of the late Enrico and Nunzia Antonucci Ciappa. He was Catholic by faith. Mr. Ciappa was a member of the United Mine Workers, having worked as a coal miner for 46 years at Beth Energy Mine No. 60. Survivors include two sons and daughters- in-law, Hank "Sonny" and Mariolein Ciappa, of Lincoln, Calif., and Nick Jr. and Linda Ciappa, of Roscoe; three grandchildren, Carrie Ann Rangel and husband Eddie, and Sean Ciappa, all of San Jose, Calif., and Hank Ciappa and wife Wendy, of Lincoln, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Della Radomile and husband Lewis, of Van Voorhis, and Helen Davis, of Charleroi; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose S. Ciappa, in 1991; and a sister, Emma Bell. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the ED MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES INC., Roscoe (724-938-9323). A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 20, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Fr. George Moneck officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Township.
