Ruth Chester, 93, of Roscoe, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield, Ohio. Born May 29, 1920, a daughter of Julius and Bertha Geiser Burry, Mrs. Chester was a member and elder of Roscoe Presbyterian Church. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, served as president and treasurer of The Forthcomers Class, and was a member and treasurer of the Janet Ray Circle. She served 32 years as clerk of session and was a Sunday school teacher for Allenport Methodist Church and Roscoe Presbyterian Church. She was also a volunteer instructor for the Washington County Literacy Program. A 1938 graduate of Charleroi High School and a graduate of California Teachers College, Mrs. Chester taught for 21 1/2 years at Allenport Elementary School and served as secretary-treasurer for Roscoe Borough for 19 years. On Oct. 1, 1947, she married Gibson "Gib" Latta Chester who precedes her in death. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jane Ann and Frank Lyon of Kirtland, Ohio; three grandsons, Ethan, Jared, and Justin Lyon; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar Burry; and three sisters, Minetta Farquhar, Marie Regula and LaVerne McCrory. Visitation will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, in the MELENYZER-DuBARR FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 1008 Furlong Ave., Roscoe. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Roscoe Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Candace Cook presiding. Interment will follow in Howe Cemetery.
