Thomas W. Kirby, 66, of Charleroi, surrounded by his loving family and friends, passed away at home Sunday, June 6, 2010. Born May 10, 1944, in North Charleroi, he was the son of the late William and Edna Collins Kirby and stepson of the late Bernard A. Kirby. A decorated Vietnam veteran, he served as Sergeant First Class of the Medical Corps Vietnam 36 Evc Hospital from 1964-67 and received the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He had a deep love for his country and the military. Following his retirement as a refrigeration specialist, he remained actively involved in numerous veterans and civic affairs. He was the Commander of the Charleroi VFW Post 167 and Chairman and Finance Officer of the Charleroi Veterans Council. He also served as Deputy Commander of the 25th District of the American Legion, Past Commander of the Charleroi American Legion Post 22, and Chairman of the Charleroi Honor Roll Committee. Surviving are his loving children; David Kirby and wife, Amy, of Monongahela, Deborah Podany and husband, Gary, of Speers, and Thomas Kirby of Charleroi; his grandchildren, Meghan, Morgan, and Matthew Kirby, Jessica and Ryan Podany, and Krisi Lenhart; his brothers, Bill Kirby and wife, Colleen, of Kingman, AZ, and Russ Kirby and wife, Margie, of Fallowfield Twp; his sister, Ellen Gelder of Barnegat, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc., 1008 Furlong Avenue, Roscoe, on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. An American Legion/VFW Service will be held at the funeral home at 7:00 pm Tuesday. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9 with Rev. Bernard Costello officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Twp.
